“Exercising more” is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions, but it’s also one of the easiest to break. Here in Birmingham, staying in shape doesn’t have to be a chore. If you want to take better care of yourself this year, lace up your running shoes and check out these fun ways to treat your body well:
Founded in the Magic City, Iron Tribe is considered one of the top five workouts in the U.S. Those looking to start a serious workout regimen can join the gym’s High Intensity Interval Training classes, receiving an effective mix of one-on-one and group training.
A personal trainer can help you develop proper exercise techniques and avoid bad habits. At Studio Fitness in Homewood, you can find personalized one-on-one training to meet your own fitness goals.

If you want to exercise both body and mind, Birmingham has several options for yoga classes. Sweet Om Alabama is a non-profit group that brings yoga to people and places that may not always have access to classes. Their current programs include a weekly session at Ruffner Mountain.
Birmingham Yoga in Forest Park hosts a wide range of special yoga classes, including prenatal courses and a five-day-per-week self-guided program.
In the shadow of the Vulcan statue, The Yoga Circle specializes in beginner’s classes, but allow students to continue as they improve. The classes focus on different aspects of yoga depending on your interests and abilities, including learning the basics, sustaining positions, and proper breathing.
In the Rocky Ridge Plaza, the PH Balanced Fitness and Massage Studio offers a number of yoga and pilates classes, as well as massages.
Get some fresh air
Railroad Park has a long footpath that encircles the entire greenspace. The soft rubber padding is easy on the feet if you want to jog, and the beautiful downtown scenery is conducive to a relaxing cooldown. There’s also a small open-air gym on the west side of the park.
Moss Rock Preserve in Hoover is one of Birmingham’s most prized natural features. Known by many locals as Boulder Field, the preserve is a popular spot for climbers thanks to its massive rock formations. There are several gently sloped rocks throughout the field that are perfect practice for beginners, but experienced climbers will find a variety of challenging boulders and routes, including the towering Ladder in the middle of the preserve. Moss Rock also features some wonderful hiking trails, each leading to scenic views, fascinating rock formations, and even a few waterfalls.
If it’s still too cold to go for a climb outdoors, Birmingham has some indoor options as well. Just south of the railroad, First Avenue Rocks allows climbers to enjoy the bouldering experience regardless of the weather. Routes on the walls change regularly, so every visit can offer a very different challenge. The facility also has a fitness room with weights and cross-training tools.
The newest climbing option in town, Birmingham Boulders is the largest bouldering gym east of the Mississippi River. The 14,000 sq. ft. facility features climbing routes for beginners as well as experts. Outward slopes will keep experienced climbers engaged, and harness ropes give climbers-in-training a little support while they tackle their first walls.
