Winter Events in Birmingham

We’re almost done with 2017, and while we can look eagerly ahead to a new year, there’s still plenty of fun to be had this December. From Christmas events to New Year’s Eve parties, have a look at what’s up in the Magic City:

Starry night

Bring the family to the Birmingham Zoo after sunset for the Zoolight Safari. While the animals rest for the night, the zoo will twinkle and shimmer with over one million Christmas lights, and the crisp air will be filled with holiday tunes. There will also be rides each night, including a carousel and 100 ft. slide. Admission is $10. The event runs until December 23, and starts again to run December 26-31.

You can also enjoy an incredible Christmas light display from the warmth of your own car. At the Birmingham Race Course, Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland features over three miles of glowing displays, all synchronized to music you can tune into via your car’s radio. The lights are up through January 7. Tickets are available at these Piggly Wiggly stores.

Enjoy the show

Alabama Theatre will host several Christmas leading up to December 25. On December 20, the gorgeous movie palace will screen a cartoon matinee starting at 2 p.m., featuring classic seasonal specials like Charlie Brown and the Grinch. At 7 p.m., They will show Elf. On December 21 they will screen A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation, and on December 22, They will show A Muppet Christmas Carol and White Christmas.

If you’re looking for music, Sister Hazel and Taylor Hicks will perform at Alabama Theatre on New Year’s Eve.

Ice skating downtown

Looking to recreate that charming scene from The Bishop’s Wife? At Railroad Park, you can lace up and ice skate in the middle of one of downtown Birmingham’s most scenic outdoor spaces. The rink is open through January 1. Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for kids 12 years and under.

A night on the town

The night separates the old year from the new is filled with celebrations across the city. With a selection of fine restaurants and venues in historic brick buildings, Birmingham’s Loft Distict is a great place to ring in the New Year. A ticket to the second annual Get Down Downtown event grants you access to happening spots like Carrigan’s, Atomic Lounge, and The Wine Loft, plus unlimited rides on the party bus that runs between each venue.
